This week’s Canada 55+ Games athlete profile is golfer Marie Beckstead. Beckstead has been playing golf for almost 20 years after her and a friend from work took up the game looking for something active they could do together.
Beckstead is 62 years old and is playing in the 55 to 64 division at this month’s national games. She loves the game for the activity, scenery and for the opportunity to meet new and interesting people. “The moment I first tried golf I knew I liked it,” said Beckstead. “It caught me right away.”
Meeting new people is a big part of the allure for Beckstead who talks about the friendships and comradery she has made along the way. “You meet people from all ages and walks of life,” she said. “From kids to seniors, everyone is there for the game and has something to offer to golf.”
Beckstead has made three very closer friends through who attend ‘Ladies Night’ every week at their club, the Cedar Glen in Williamsburg. She and friend Ann Cook who will be competing in the ‘Prediction Walking’ event at the games roomed together for the Provincials in London and will be continuing with their routine by rooming together again for the nationals. “We just want to keep things consistent,” said Beckstead. “We did well at the provincials so there’s no need to change anything.”
With the Canadian senior games coming to town later this month, great examples of how to stay active and fit will be all around us. Beckstead encourages everyone to get out and do something that you love to do. “People need to find something active that they truly love to do,” said Beckstead. “I find once you quit, you’re gone.”
