As Ontario marks Fire Prevention Week from October 3-9, Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark is urging local residents to join him in recognizing the brave men and women of the riding who are on the frontlines of fire safety.
“We should never take for granted the service provided to our communities by firefighters, who at a moment’s notice are prepared to put their own lives on the line to protect others,” stated Clark.
“Whether they’re volunteers or full-time firefighters, these men and women demonstrate in our municipalities the kind of values we all should strive to uphold: honour, courage and a commitment to the selfless service of others,” added Clark.
Clark noted the solemn start to Fire Prevention Week was Sunday’s annual dedication service at the Ontario Fallen Firefighters Memorial, where the names of 31 fallen firefighters were added to the 500 already engraved there on its granite walls.
The memorial is located at Queen’s Park, where it stands as a stark reminder at the dangers every firefighter faces when they put on the uniform, stressed Clark.
Among the 31 names added this year, were two from Leeds-Grenville: Prescott Fire Chief Bill Lawrence, who died on March 6, 2021 and Brockville Fire Department Captain Brian Heaton, who died on January 24, 2010.
“Both men are deeply missed in the communities they served and I will be personally visiting the memorial today to pay my respects,” said Clark.
