For the first time in its history, the prestigious Quebec cycling event, the Grand Tour Desjardins, will take place in Ontario, along the Rideau Heritage Route and through the Thousand Islands region. A caravan of 1,800 bicycle tourists will stop over in the towns of Perth, Belleville and Kingston, and Brockville will be the starting and finishing point of the event. "For a few years now, cyclists have been asking us to hold the Grand Tour Desjardins in Ontario. We spent a lot of time examining this possibility in order to find an optimal itinerary that would allow them to explore the most beautiful areas of southern Ontario, while benefitting from a selection of optional routes adapted to different cycling levels," explains Joëlle Sévigny, Executive Director of Vélo Québec Événements and Voyages.
Organizers from the Grand Tour have been working closely with Dave Paul, City of Brockville Director Economic Development, Doug Roughton, Acting Dean, St. Lawrence College Brockville and Kim Barr, Brockville and District Tourism Manager.
The tour will depart from St. Lawrence College on Saturday, August 6th, 2011 and return to St. Lawrence College on Friday, August 12, 2011! “Many volunteers are needed to help with this exciting opportunity Brockville has been given,” says Kim Barr, Tourism Manager.
