Cold weather start for track and field

The members the TISS, BCI and ST. Mary track and field teams got their first taste of competition on Thursday last week in extremely harsh conditions, something the athletes hope will be gone before the Kinsmen meet on May 6th and 7th.

It was the first taste of competition against several regional schools for the members of the Pirates, Red Rams and Crusaders.  The athletes battled near zero temperatures and snow throughout the day.

The day was dominated in the standings by TISS, who took the overall title with Sydenham coming in second place and St. Mary jumping up into third place overall.

The senior men’s team from TISS lead the way for the Pirates in almost every event.  Brandon Howell and Jesse Kennedy lead the way in the field, while the senior men’s 4 x 100 won with a time that would have eclipsed the EOSSAA record.  In the distance races Nick Servage, Courtney Serson, Shelby Kent, Tyler Nolan, and Missy Schutten all had exception days.

St. Mary had a great day in the field and on the track, finishing with their highest rating in recent years.  Both the women’s and men’s teams finished third overall behind TISS and Sydenham.  BCI rounded out the local schools finishing ninth in the overall standings.

The Kinsmen meet begins on Friday May 6th through Saturday May 7th and will attract the best student athletes from around the province.  The meet will be held at Thousand Islands Secondary School.

Jumping into another season of rugby

Mike Barkley dives in for a try in junior men’s rugby action on Thursday at South Grenville.  The junior boys won 18-0 over Sydenham of Kingston.

Crusaders junior women’s rugby winger Frannie Birt runs with the ball during the opening game of the season on Monday at St. Mary School.
